Chapter Six

Florence waited in the parlor for Jake to come home, intending to apologize to him immediately and praying he would find it in his heart to forgive her for her treatment of him, even though she knew she didn’t deserve to be forgiven. She’d taken out her anger at Arthur on him, and she’d never even had proof.

Sitting in the parlor with a book on her lap, she listened for the door, planning to tell him right away how sorry she was and how much she cared for him and didn’t want their marriage to fail.

As soon as she heard the door, she jumped to her feet and rushed into the hallway. “Can we talk?” she asked.

He raised an eyebrow. “I thought you already had me figured out. Why would you want to talk? I don’t think there’s anything left to say, is there?”

“I’m sorry,” she said. “If you’ll come into the parlor with me, I’ll give you a proper apology, on my knees if necessary.”

“Or I can buy you a train ticket back to Massachusetts. That would work as well, don’t you think?”

“No, I don’t. I won’t go back there.”

“Because you’ll be laughed at? Poor Florence. So mistreated by the men in her life.”

Florence shook her head. “One man mistreated me, but never you. You gave me nothing but affection, and in turn, I was terrible to you.”

“Yes, you were. I’m sorry, but an apology isn’t enough right now. I treated you like a queen.”

“You did. And I threw it back into your face like some sort of shrew. I’ll do whatever it takes to get you to forgive me.”

“Good luck with that.” Jake knew he was being awful, but he felt that she deserved it. Never had he done a single thing to make her think he was less than trustworthy, and he would have told her the full truth if she’d only asked. But she’d drawn her own conclusions—the same conclusions everyone else in town had drawn. He’d been certain by bringing in a lady from the east to marry, there would be no more talk of his dalliances, and even if there was, he’d have a wife to side with him.

He went up the stairs to change for supper, not bothering to worry about how she was feeling. He’d spent altogether too much time being the perfect husband. Now he could be the scorned husband.

At supper, she sat at the foot of the table, where she’d only sat one night before, and she toyed with her food, eating very little. He noticed, but he said nothing. She needed to learn a lesson. And he was going to have to be her teacher whether he liked it or not.

Florence stared down at her food, wondering what she could do to convince him that she was truly contrite, and she would never believe anything negative about him again. She’d definitely learned her lesson.

When she’d finished pushing the food around on her plate, she asked, “May I move back into our bedroom?”

He shrugged.
